Didelphis aurita occurs in eastern Brazil, Paraguay and northeastern Argentina (Map). It is a habitat generalist inhabiting primary and secondary forests and forest fragments in the Atlantic and Araucaria forests, but also in rural areas. D. aurita is mainly terrestrial, but often climbs trees. Like many other opossums this species is omnivorous.
